I first heard of Ambrose Bierce (wikilink) in sophomore English class at St Ignatius High. He is a major figure in San Francisco’s thin literary history.
His delightful Devil’s Dictionary is in the public domain. Bierce wasn’t a big fan of religion in any form, per the below entry.
