POPE POOPS ON THE POOR

According to predictive reports, Jesuit liberation theologist Father Jon Sobrino will soon be silenced by Pope Ratzinger.

Liberation theology focuses on helping poor people and on eliminating systems of poverty. Ratzinger’s view is that strictly speaking the Church’s only obligation to the poor is one communion wafer per person per day—any more is optional, like charity.

Ratzinger’s opposition to liberation theology should not be controversial. It demonstrates simply that he understands the role of religion in society as noted by Napoleon:

Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.

The error is Father Sobrino’s. He has the fantasy that the Church can be made an instrument for progressive political change. History points in a different direction.

It’s difficult for a kid to admit that mommy isn’t a very nice person. Or that daddy was a Hitler Youth.

The Church cares ultimately about only one thing, itself.
