It’s a simple syllogism:
1) Per Baltimore Catechism #2, it’s a mortal sin to willfully miss Mass on Sunday.
390. Q. Is it a mortal sin not to hear Mass on a Sunday or a holyday of obligation?
A. It is a mortal sin not to hear Mass on a Sunday or a holyday of obligation, unless we are excused for a serious reason. They also commit a mortal sin who, having others under their charge, hinder them from hearing Mass, without a sufficient reason.
2) Only one-third of U.S. Catholics attend Mass weekly.
According to a CU prof, quoted in this USA Today article, only about 33% of U.S. Catholics go to church on a weekly basis.
3) Therefore: Most U.S. Catholics are living in mortal sin and would be deserving of Hell if the world were to end right now.The "most damaging change in Catholic life is the precipitous decline in Mass attendance. It's the sign of a church collapsing," says Catholic University sociologist William D'Antonio, co-author of statistical studies of American Catholics.
Conclusion: The threat of eternal damnation ain’t what it used to be.
