BAPTISTS JUST AS BAD?

Don McGuire, S.J., might be the most famous Jesuit priest in America today. Freed by the court while appealing his felony child molestation conviction, Father McGuire has been jailed twice for violating the terms of his release.

According to this Chicago Sun-Times story, a new civil suit has been filed against McGuire and the Jesuits, by a John Doe.

The suit alleges that Jesuit priest Donald McGuire abused a boy over a three-year-period, beginning in 1999, when the victim was 13 years old and living periodically with the priest at Canisius House, a Jesuit residence in Evanston.

A spokesman for the Chicago province tried to pick a hole in the allegation:

"It is highly unlikely that a minor or a non-Jesuit would be living in a Jesuit residence in any capacity," said Jeremy Langford.

I guess that wouldn’t include, technically, the two mentally retarded live-in dishwashers who were serially raped by multiple Jesuits at their Northern California retreat center.

Notable in the Sun-Times story about Father McGuire is John Doe #116’s legal team—one of his attorneys is a nephew of Father McGuire.

"I'm ashamed of my uncle and I'm unmasking him for the child predator that he is," said [Kevin] McGuire, a personal-injury lawyer from Newport Beach, Calif.

McGuire, S.J., is old and fat and probably just doesn’t give a shit. He managed to touch some lovely stuff in his career.

Google image search turns up few images of Father McGuire. Here he poses, years ago, with a family that’s associated with Gonzaga. The little boy isn’t smiling.

There’s a story in recent news about a Chicago area Baptist congregation hiring a minister who is a convicted child molester. The Sun-Times story is here.

It’s kind of touching, and pathetic, that congregants believed so much in the transformative power of faith that they were willing to trust their children with a convicted sex offender.

There were sound-bites on the news last night of a woman who tracks clergy abuse in American Protestant denominations (or maybe just Baptists).

It was her contention that clergy child sexual predation was as big a problem in the Baptist churches as in the Catholic Church.

Catholics, including Jesuits, set the standard.

I guess what's REALLY important is that Catholics got the Latin Mass back, right? -- NOT! Wish the so-called orthodox Catholics would work as hard at getting rid of the scumbags in the RCC as they did in getting the Latin Mass back... sheAnon

Is there any presumption of innocence when it comes to the accusations against Fr. McGuire or is it enough that a lawsuit has been filed against him? His nephew took a case against his Uncle. With the millions of attorneys in this country, that sounds like some sort of money grubbing, publicity stunt. I wonder how long the nephew has hated the Church and his uncle.

sheAnon: The orthodox Catholics have been working for years to get rid of the "scumbags" in the Church. I am sure that most othodox Catholics are neutral on the whole entire Latin Mass issue, and pretty much despise their Bishops for their laxity on the homosexual predator\sexual abuse scandal in the Church. So, your remark regarding the Latin Mass is misplaced and a real non sequitur, to say the least.

Dear Wondering,
You've missed a major point about McGuire's situtation. Please note that McGuire has already been found guilty of felony child abuse. The case his nephew is pursuing is another case.
How the nephew "feels" about the Catholic Church is irrelevant.

I am grieved to hear about these allegations - I attended a retreat he offered some 10 years ago in a private home with about a dozen other young (late teenage) guys. I met with him privately, and he gave sage and sound advice. No inappropriate behavior occured.

Two, now three students coming forward after forty years with this story... In court neither of them could identify what news reports have discretely noted "distinctive characteristics of his genitals"... His grounds for appeal seem strong.

It’s kind of touching, and pathetic, that congregants believed so much in the transformative power of faith that they were willing to trust their children with a convicted sex offender.

Insulting at many levels... but the idea that these accusations (if they were true to begin with) were widely known and the faithful like idiots sent children to him like sheep to the slaughter...

Well it betrays your hostility. These accusations simply were not known.

My entire education for all of my degrees since age 18 has been with the Jesuits. I am sick to read what I read about the Jesuit tonight about the Jesuit in the article I found while googling Jesuit schools.

The Jesuits of our university were and are outstanding members in the S.F. community and given the City's underserved populations great opportunities to have an education, to receive services from our students, and misconduct of any priest as a Catholic faithful and educated by the Jesuits is disgusting for all of us in society.

The Jesuits educate us and their students to serve and be leaders, not to prey upon the weak, nor to practice and participate in the injustices in society.

For any person reading the article I read this evening, and not knowing the mission of the Jesuit education, nor the Jesuits, I apologize to the general public for the sick behavior of the Jesuit who in reality is not a Jesuit by any means. This man is only a person who utilized the Jesuits and their wonderful outreach programs to prey upon and have access to vulnerable people.

For those who do not know the Jesuits, they are not priests that in any manner would allow another Jesuit to behave in this immoral manner as many "Catholic" priests have done. The Jesuits are intellectuals, and their mission is to promote social justice, not to exploit the vulnerable. They expose their own as most orders will not. Please read about the history of the Jesuits if you are unfamiliar with the work they do in the world. They are not like the "Catholic parish priests" who are transported from parish to parish hidden by the Archdioses.

In fact, the Jesuits are the leaders in the Catholic Church of social justice and their work and universities reflect their true mission in life for centuries.

I hope this man in this article can one day live with his conscience he may or may not have.

Reflection is a huge part of the Jesuit education which clearly this man who is in no manner a "Jesuit."

Clearly, this man, not a "Jesuit," but an disturbed opportunist deserves his fate by betraying children and his fellow Jesuits.

Please read about our universities if you have the time. The Jesuits give a person, "Catholic" or not one of the best educations in America no matter what your choice of study is.

Sorry for that sick man, not a Jesuit.
